In an episode of Dr. Oz, he explained how to make “rocket fuel” coffee in which he recommended replacing sugar in coffee with butter. Dr. Oz claimed the butter causes the caffeine to last longer in your body, which is true.
But it actually does much more than that.
You have probably heard about butter in coffee somewhere else if it wasn’t Dr. Oz. It’s becoming very popular. But butter in coffee is nothing new. Ethiopians are known to mix spiced butter into their coffee. A staple drink for Tibetans is yak butter vigorously churned into their hot tea to prevent the fat and water from separating. This is regarded as an essential source of energy and helps them flourish in their harsh, frigid climate.
What Dr. Oz failed to mention is that butter in coffee was recently popularized by a technology entrepreneur and self-proclaimed biohacker named Dave Asprey. Dave named his concoction Bulletproof Coffee®. Bulletproof coffee is made with his low-toxin Upgraded coffee beans, KerryGold grass-fed butter, and MCT oil (an extract from coconut and palm oil) which feeds your brain and is quickly turned into energy. He blends everything in a blender, which creates small droplets of fat suspended in the coffee, preventing disbursement and helping the body use all the fat for fuel. Blending it also create a nice froth at the top.
Dr. Oz recommends mixing the butter and coffee together with a fork (gross!).
I’ve noticed that buttered coffee really is great for enhancing mental clarity and sharpness. It’s also a great fat-loss tool (if consumed properly) because it keeps hunger at bay and stimulates the body’s natural fat-burning potential. I’ve been adding butter to my coffee for a little over a year and have my own version that I call Keto Coffee. This is one of the tools I use to put my body into fat-burning autopilot.
Here’s how to correctly use buttered coffee to reap its full benefits.
First, know that Bulletproof Coffee is often used as a crunch to extend a fasting window. Although it technically does break a fast because it contains calories, it doesn’t raise insulin. So you can get many of the benefits of intermittent fasting by extending your fasting window while reducing cravings and hunger.
Second, buttered coffee is not designed to drink with your morning donut or bagel. It’s a meal replacement as it contains a significant punch of (healthy) calories. Plus, if you eat and drink a bulletproof coffee, your body won’t burn the triglycerides from the butter. It will instead raise triglycerides, increasing triglyceride to HDL ratio (an important health marker).
Once you feel comfortable skipping breakfast, I recommend switching to drinking only black coffee or unsweetened tea so that you’re not drinking your calories. You can learn much more about proper intermittent fasting by reading my Ultimate Fasting Guide.
If I do use keto coffee, I’ll drink it on mornings when I plan to restrict my eating window, typically consuming it around 5AM and not eating my first meal until around 11AM (about 16 hours after my last meal.) Intermittent Fasting encourages your body to change from burning carbs to burning fat. It increases fat-burning and anti-aging hormones and turns off your fat storing hormones. The goal is to normalize your weight, prevent many chronic diseases, and put your body into detoxification mode by cleaning up damaged cells and proteins.
Consuming fat like in my keto coffee during a fast will not interrupt these benefits and will keep you full longer. Here’s how I make my Keto Coffee:
- 2 cups Purity organic coffee made with an Aeropress
- Add 1tsp to 2 Tbsp MCT oil (start off slowly and work your way up)
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
Since everyone in my house is usually sleeping when I make it, I mix my coffee with a frother instead of a loud blender.
A Couple Tips
I highly recommend using organic grass-fed butter. The most well known and easy to find is KerryGold (silver label is unsalted). It’s not certified organic but it is grass-fed. You can probably find some really good grass-fed butter from a local farmer’s market as well.
I like to use Purity organic coffee which is the only coffee with the highest antioxidants and ZERO toxins, and freshly grind them every morning. This ensures healthiest cup of coffee and it just tastes better! Go with organic fair trade if you can find it. If you purchase Purity, use code EVOLVEDNS for 10% off.
When buying MCT oil, ensure the oil is 100% caprylic acid (C8). I recommend Designs for Health KTO-C8 100.
Strictly avoid all forms of sugar as this will interrupt the fasting period and fat burning potential.
Have you tried butter in your coffee? What did you think? If you have, what else do you add to it?
UPDATE: In a recent episode of Dr. Oz featuring Dave Asprey, Dave mentions adding collagen, which I really like. This is why I’ve put together the Keto Coffee Bundle. Use code VIP15 for 15% off + free shipping.

I tried butter in my coffee this morning. Normally I crash around 2 hours after drinking the coffee. Today I did not and was surprised at how clear I was mentally. I will try this out more, and see if this pattern continues.
Troy Delaney says
Yeah, it really is crazy how much better mentally I feel. I think the MCT oil makes a difference too. I was also surprised at how it kept me full for hours. Keep me post on how it works for you Chris. Thanks for the comment!

Tried it this morning for the first time, the simpler basic recipe. Feeling very energetic/wired and not feeling any hunger at all. Will have to see how long it lasts and the after-effects when it wears off.

Good to hear Mike!. Let me know how it goes.

not all is as it seems
additional feed for Kerrygold cows could be GMO, has anyone had confirmation?

I’m confused by something you said in the piece: You advocated *increasing* your Triglyceride/HDL ratio. It’s true that the TG/HDL ratio is an important health marker, but THE SMALLER THE RATIO THE BETTER! You absolutely don’t want to increase this ratio!
Please clarify.
Troy Delaney says
You are correct, TG/HDL-C should be ideally below 1 (when both are measured in mg/dL) when most insulin sensitive. Most doctors are happy if less than 3. Thanks for pointing that out!
