The Ultimate Guide to Decaf Coffee: Using it to Improve Health & Performance and Choosing the Best Decaf

January 25, 2021 by Troy Delaney 1 Comment

Many people are dependent on their coffee and don’t even know it. They rely on and look forward to that ‘kick’ first thing in the morning. Or you might be one of those that experience unpleasant physical and mental symptoms from caffeine, including anxiety, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, stomach pain, and bladder irritation.

Most people don’t even consider replacing regular coffee with decaf, even for a short period of time because most decafs taste bad and may harm your health because of the potentially dangerous chemicals they use to process it.

In fact, most commercial decaf coffees use Methylene Chloride or Ethyl Acetate in their decaffeination process. Ethyl Acetate is commonly also used in glues, nail polish removers. Methylene chloride is so harmful that it was even banned to be used in paint thinners. The FDA has approved the chemical to be non-toxic to consume in accepted levels.

Although most of us will not be imminently affected by methylene chloride, those who are vulnerable include pregnant moms, the elderly, and those with heart complications. You can see the issue here as those groups are usually decaf drinkers. This harsh chemical used in most decaf coffees can be passed on from the mother to the baby which can cause serious damage even if it is a small amount of methylene chloride.

Finding the right decaf that tastes good, makes you feel good and is good for you can be a complete game changer.

You can enjoy decaf coffee and still drink regular strategically to get the most out of it.

How to Build a Chest Freezer Ice Bath

August 23, 2020 by Troy Delaney 28 Comments

Before I jump into the details, I recommend joining my Fire & Ice Contrast Therapy (Hot-Cold) facebook group.

Daily 3-5 minute cold plunges have been the single biggest impact on my mood, productivity and health. I don’t miss a day.

But in order to do it daily, you have to have cold water consistently available. Filling a stock tub full of ice is time consuming, expensive and temporary. Cold showers are a great entry into cold therapy but to maximize the benefits, you need it colder.

The best option is to either buy a premade plunge like The Cold Plunge (use code TROY150 for $150 off) or build one yourself.

But before I jump into building one…

If you’ve found this article, you probably already know the many benefits of cold plunges. If you don’t, here’s a quick rundown —

Cold water therapy — whether it’s a quick swim in an icy lake, a post-workout ice bath, or a brisk shower — can benefit your health in several ways.

It may help you:

  • cut down on muscle soreness
  • cool down after a sweaty workout
  • get into a better mood
  • aid your immune system
  • boost your metabolism and calorie burning
  • increase insulin sensitivity and help control blood glucose levels

It can also convert belly fat into metabolically active brown adipose tissue, which will increase your fat-burning capacity.

Some advocates say it can also decrease inflammation, improve your sleep and recovery, sharpen your mental focus and potentially fight certain types of cancer as well as promote overall longevity. But more research needs to be done to determine if these benefits are supported by science.

A chest freezer ice bath allows you to avoid having to continuously purchase ice and have access to a desired temperature at all times.

Now, the details to getting started with a chest freezer ice bath.

Required Equipment & Material

  • Freezer: Frigidaire 14.8 CuFt (you can go even larger with a 19 CuFt if you’re over 6’5″)
  • Food-grade Silicone sealant or JB Water Weld
  • The Ultimate Chest Freezer Cold Plunge DIY Guide (e-Book) – If you want a step-by-step guide to build your cold plunge the RIGHT way, I highly recommend this book.
  • My ebook Exposure 101 Heat & Cold Guidebook

Cleaning/Sanitizing

  • Marineland Magnum Filter
  • Evob Skimmer net
  • Hydrogen peroxide or a much better option is an ozone generator
  • 8 lbs Epsom salt – keeps the water clean and prevents ice from forming

Temperature

  • Inkbird Digital Thermostat – controls the preset temperature automatically
  • Etekcity Lasergrip digital thermostat
  • Polar bear thermometer

Other Stuff

  • Clear Water Fun garden hose filter – filters out the chemicals in treated water
  • Gooseneck iPhone Holder
  • BINO Collapsible Basin – to clean feet in before going in
  • Rubber Ducky – for nostalgia 🙂
  • Personal Harmonizer for native EMFs
  • Magnesium flakes – I add this for the health benefits of soaking in magnesium salts. If you really want to revitalize and optimize your cold plunge solution, I recommend grabbing a back of Max Vitality Magnesium Salts (use code TROY for 10% off). In addition to magnesium, the sodium ascorbate in the blend will totally neutralize any toxic chemicals like chlorine or fluoride that may be in your cold plunge water, within just five minutes!  Every bag of their salt is also blasted with powerful heart opening, grounding and magnesium healing frequencies to accelerate healing and sensations of peace during and post-plunge.
  • My favorite supplement stack for maximizing the benefits of cold thermogenesis – contains 1) select from coffee of green tea for a bit of caffeine which can upregulate mitochondrial biogenesis even more when stacked with cold therapy and 2) Meriva (curcumin) which can  activate brown adipose tissue, enhancing the energy expenditure through heat production to burn more fat.
  • JED 303 Ozone Generator – Not mentioned in this video but I did end up getting this to sanitize the water. I discuss it in more detail in this video: Upgrades to My Chest Freezer Ice Bath

Instructions

  1. Place you freezer in a location that you will be able to drain it and have access to water, like a hose.
  2. Place boards under your freezer to support the bottom (see picture below).
  3. Seal all seems with the proper caulk or JB Water Weld.
  4. Let the seal dry for at least 24 hours.
  5. OPTIONAL: Place a pond liner in your freezer for extra leak protection
  6. Install your ozone generator, thermometer and water filter.
  7. Add hydrogen peroxide and Epsom salt.
  8. Fill with water. Be sure to mix the Epsom salt a little.
  9. Dump 100-200 lbs of ice to speed of the cooling process, otherwise the freezer will have to run for several days. NOTE: The chest freezer will get pretty warm from running.
  10. Prior to jumping in, UNPLUG THE FREEZER.
  11. Take the plunge!

A great resource is my Fire & Ice Contrast Therapy (Hot-Cold) facebook group.

Be sure to support the bottom of your freezer.

The Best Dark Chocolate at Trader Joes

May 27, 2020 by Troy Delaney 12 Comments

I “forced” my daugter to do a chocolate taste test 🙂

Trader Joes is a great grocery store to find unique products including a variety of really amazing dark chocolates. Dark chocolate is more than just a really nice treat; it’s actually a superfood, chock full of antioxidants called cocoa flavanols. Score!

How do you find good dark chocolate?

Good dark chocolate has a high cacao content – high fat, and low-ish in sugar. The higher the cacao content, the higher in antioxidants and fiber and usually lower in sugar. Most health experts consider any chocolate that contains 70% or higher cacao content as a healthy choice.

Organic and fair-trade are also important.

Here are six dark chocolates only available at Trader Joes (maybe on Amazon?). My daughter and I tested all six and all were really delicious.

If you don’t have access to Trader Joes or just want to get your hands on some healthy and delicious dark chocolate, here are my top 3 online recommendations (plus a bonus):

  1. Madecasse 92 Percent Dark Chocolate (Amazon)
  2. Kosterina Extra Virgin Olive Oil Dark Chocolate
  3. Montezuma’s Dark Chocolate Absolute Black (Amazon) – this one was rated the highest in flavanols and lowest in the toxic metal cadmium by ConsumerLabs.com
  4. Drinking Chocolate: Organifi Chocolate Gold (use code Troy for 20% off)

Jacuzzi Clearlight Sanctuary Y Infrared Sauna Review

April 26, 2020 by Troy Delaney 6 Comments

I love to do Bikram (hot) yoga. The amount you sweat during a 90 minute session is unbelievable. And you walk out feeling detoxed and mentally clear. As modern humans, many of us miss out on the opportunity to get a good sweat on a daily basis.

Humans are arguably not meant to be at a constant, comfortable temperature, and that true, optimal health requires at least occasional cold and hot practices.

In addition to the occasional discomfort, I believe humans are meant to sweat daily. Sweat secretions contain dermcidin, an antibiotic peptide that appears to regulate bacteria growth on the skin and may fight infection. Sweat has also been found to contain toxins such as BPA which means it’s one method for humans to detox.

And one of the most interesting things about using a sauna is that it actives something called “heat-shock proteins” which have been linked to resiliency and longevity.

This is what ignited my research into the world of saunas.

In addition to a good sweat and detox, supposed benefits of using an infrared sauna are similar to those experienced with a traditional sauna. This includes:

  • better sleep
  • relaxation
  • weight loss
  • relief from sore muscles
  • relief from joint pain such as arthritis
  • clear and tighter skin
  • improved circulation
  • help for people with chronic fatigue syndrome

Before I jump into my review, I wanted to mention the two main types of saunas:

  1. Dry/Wet or Traditional Finnish Saunas – Heats up the air using an electric heater and stones or burning wood to produce the heat. Temperatures usually range between 150-195 F.
  2. Infrared (IR) Saunas – Often referred to as waon therapy in the literature, infrared uses panels that emit the infrared waves portion of the light spectrum to heat a person’s core body temperature vs heating the external air. The whole point of an infrared room is that it delivers heat therapy without getting extremely hot. Temperatures usually range between 120-150 F.

Why I Chose Clearlight and an Infrared Sauna:

  • Infrared saunas are usually smaller and easier for home use
  • Infrared saunas don’t get as hot so you can do breathing exercises in them without burning your lungs. You can also use most electronic wearables inside with damaging them. I wear an Oura ring, Garmin watch and Whoop band inside my sauna and never had any problems. I would avoid bringing a smartphone in as they seem to be more heat sensitive.
  • Infrared saunas are make you sweat at much lower temperatures so it’s easier to do breathing exercise and movement routines in
  • Clearlight has a great reputation in the infrared sauna industry
  • Clearlight has a LIFETIME warranty (which I have tested out — they have sent me a new ceiling, no questions asked)
  • Clearlight saunas are low-EMF (if you’re concerned about or sensitive to EMFs)
  • Clearlight’s Sanctuary models offer full-spectrum lighting (near-, mid-, and far-infrared)
  • Clearlight offers the “Hot Yoga” sauna cabin. As mentioned above, I loved doing Bikram (Hot) Yoga. Clearlight’s Sanctuary-Y (Yoga) offers the ability to do Bikram in the comfort of your home. The two benches in the Sanctuary-Y sauna are easily removed to create a large open space to work out, stretch and do yoga. Set it up with two benches in, two benches out, or one bench in and one bench out. With heaters that go all the way to the sauna floor, you’ll work up a sweat in no time during your work out. You can read my article on the benefits of exercising in the heat here.
