Imagine waking to complete silence. There isn’t a mad rush, any distractions, and there is an absence of stress. Everything is calm.
You get out of bed relaxed and you perform a set of rituals that get you into a flow state – a state that puts your mind and body in complete control of your entire day. Maybe you enjoy your cup of coffee or maybe you name five things you’re thankful for in life.
The morning can be a time you enjoy – and it’s possible for anyone. I’m going to show you how to create a launch sequence for each morning that decreases stress and makes you calmly effective and in control for the rest of the day.
The morning is probably the most important time of the day, at least it is for me. It sets the tone for the rest of your day. Starting off right can determine whether you have a great day or a horrible day.
Morning rituals should be spent on activities that are important but not urgent and result in accomplishing your longterm goals.
I’ve talked about how to become a morning person in a previous post and want to help you take the next step – perfecting your morning.
It Starts with a Chemical Reaction
Morning rituals create a chemical reaction within your body that can completely alter your perception and mood. When hormones and neurotransmitters are released at the right time, you feel great which can carry throughout the day. A perfect morning causes a large surge of dopamine and everything shines with optimism. Our brains are literally hardwired to perform at their best in this positive state of mind.
Early mornings are when you are the most disciplined. For example, if you eat right first thing in the morning (which contributes to the chemical reaction), you are more likely to eat right the rest of the day.
Surprisingly, most people are more productive within the first three hours of the day than their remaining waking hours. It’s something you have to experience to understand.
On the other hand, people in a bad mood tend to procrastinate more and become less successful throughout the day.
Highly successful people tend to spend their mornings:
- Meditating
- Listening or reading self-improvement material
- Exercising
- Mapping out their day and creating a to-do list
- Working on their most important task
My Launch Sequence
My ritual is made up of waking early (around 4 or 5), drinking some water and then drinking either a keto coffee (on workout days) or black coffee (on fasting days), 5 minutes of tai chi or meditation, listening to my favorite song, and then going to the gym.
A really good cup of coffee helps….grinding the beans, pouring the hot water over the fresh grounds and adding a few other ingredients, then savoring its flavor is actually one of the things I look forward to each morning. It motivates me to get out of bed.
All of this combined creates this perfect scenario in my body that makes me feel absolutely great the rest of the day.
Creating the Ritual
- Start the Night Before
- Make sure it’s something you value and that brings you happiness.
- Each night, establish a closing ritual. Try to end each day the same way, spending 20 minutes before bed for some relaxing introspection. This can be meditation, prayer, acknowledging gratitude or simply quiet breathing. Isolate yourself from people and electronics so you can spend some quality time slowing the outer world.
- Write down the single most important to-do that you will complete tomorrow. This helps with follow-through, relieves anxiety and helps you enjoy your evening. Determine breakfast and layout your clothes the night before as well. You’ll wake up feeling in control and relaxed.
- Be intentional with what you do first thing in the morning
- Make sure it’s something you value and that brings you happiness.
- Make at least the first hour your own. If this requires getting up a little earlier, do it. Even 15 minutes earlier can have an exponential impact on the rest of your day. Just make sure to go to bed a little earlier to compensate.
- Avoid email at all costs! Emails are someone else’s agenda, not yours.
- If the sun is out, step outside and take in some fresh morning air. Let the sun get on as much skin as possible (Go naked if your neighbors don’t mind.)
- Prime your subconscious
- Perform a brief meditation session.
- Check in with your why – your purpose and how you are going to get closer to it today
- Experience gratitude and mindfulness
- Breathe deeply
- Visualize yourself in your ideal state – kicking ass and winning. Your thoughts will become a reality.
- Instead of reading or watching the news or social media, watch something motivational, uplifting or humorous. This will create positive, fun thoughts to keep you energized and optimistic throughout the day. Anything that is captured in your subconscious will directly affect you in the form of emotions, circumstances and events.
- Perform a brief meditation session.
- Exercise
- Do something that will get your blood flowing – 30 seconds of light exercises (pull-ups, squats, or if you’re crazy, burpees), some yoga, or even some tai chi.
- If you have time, perform a full exercise routine. Exercise is usually easier to stick to in the morning, gets endorphins pumping, makes your mind and body happy and alert, boosts your metabolism and energy, and improves sleep.
- Start your day off with a keystone habit. This is a habit that controls how you are the rest of the day. For me, exercising in the morning is my keystone habit. When I exercise, I think better, feel better, sleep better, and eat better throughout the rest of the day.
You can create the perfect morning; it’s just a matter of experimenting with different habits. Start with a few small changes. Once you create the perfect scenario, you’ll know.
The goal is to have a personal system that primes you to crush it for the rest of the day.
