I’ve been doing 5-day water-only fasts every 6 months since 2015 as a reboot, along with all the other benefits of an extended fast โ reduced inflammation, overcoming a weight and fitness plateau, improved body composition, metabolic health, energy levels, and improved healthspan.
I know what you’re thinking — why five days? There’s NO WAY I can do five days!
In essence, the real benefit to prolonged fasting versus shorter term fasts (24-72hrs) is the ability to fully “activate” the stress resistance response associated with fasting (cellular clean-up, rejuvenation, etc.).
I still remember my first one. I remember the waves of hunger pangs, day three being the worst. My wife said I was hangry and moody (rightfully so!).
The funny thing was, the hunger wasn’t the worst part โ it was the mental aspect. The ACT of eating, the RITUAL of eating โ both gone.
Lunch time? Just water for me.
Time to make dinner for the family…for me? WATER.
MORE DAMN WATER! (Every now and then I would drink some black decaf coffee or unsweetened tea)
Doing a water-only fast, you realize how much of your day revolves around food. The flavors, the act of chewing, the planning of a meal.
And you seriously miss it.
But before you start filling your water bottle in preparation for your fast, I want to share something I recently tried โ the ProLon Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD).
I was introduced to the ProLon FMD by an Integrative/Functional Medicine doctor (Dr. Perlman) at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. I was helping him set up his Integrative & Functional Medicine Clinic. As we were talking about his vision of the clinic, I mentioned to him that I do semi-annual fasts and he said he was interested in implementing a fasting program for some of his chemo patients. He said Dr. Valter Longo’s research showed that fasting can help reduce the negative side effects of chemo.
But compliance was low for a 5-day water-only fast so Dr. Longo came up with the FMD (fasting with food). Dr. Perlman went on to explain that there are certain types of food and at certain levels of calories per day that “trick” your cells into thinking they are being starved.
I had heard of Dr. Longo and the FMD years ago but I was skeptical so I never really dug into it.
That is, until Dr. Perlman brought it up. If Dr. Perlman is recommending it, there must be something to it.
So I dug into the research…
It turns out the ProLon FMD is both efficacious (it works) and effective (it can actually be adhered to – there’s a 92% success rate). In fact, it’s been clinically studied and validated at the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California and been patented for its anti-aging effects.
This is not some multi-level marketing product, a “detox” diet, or juice cleanse. There is over $30 million and 20 years of scientific research in it!
So you get all the benefits of fasting while still being able to eat…
Finally, something to look forward to when lunch and dinner rolled around!
Meals come in five small boxes, one for each day, that include plant-based energy bars, soups, a variety of snacks, drinks, and supplements. All ingredients have been studied and carefully designed to nourish your body โ but are not recognized as food by your body and therefore mimics a fasting state — meaning it provides benefits that surpass other types of diets and even water and intermittent fasting. Plus, it’s safer and keeps you energized.
This was a complete game-changer for me.
And the food tastes REALLY good and contains QUALITY ingredients (not a bunch of processed crap).
I believe FMD is THE secret to fasting โ with real and delicious food.
Th benefits of the FMD that I noticed or have been noted in ProLon’s clinical trials are:
- Enhanced performance (better focus, clarity and energy)
- Fat focused weight loss (especially belly fat while protecting muscle)
- Enhanced cellular renewal (stem cell-based regeneration and reduced inflammation)
- Metabolic health (improved biomarkers)
- Glowing skin (“looking younger”)
- Better sleep (my sleep always suffered during water-only fasts but going to bed with some food in the belly significantly improved my sleep)
And it also elevates much of the mental difficulties I’ve experienced with water-only fasts.ย Anyone can do it (compliance is around 92%)!
The benefits continue after the fast as well. Many people report the ability to resist bingeing once they resume a normal diet. Many reduce their consumption of sugar and calories, and are less prone to excess in their consumption of coffee, alcohol, desserts, etc. I definitely noticed this for me.
In fact, in the ProLon studies, 60% of the weight loss was maintained three months after resuming a normal diet!
I don’t want you to suffer like I did.
